If you live in the Manchester area, chances are, you have heard the name Hebert’s Used Auto Parts before. For over a century, the Hebert’s name has proudly grown to be the number one location for NH salvaged cars. However, our shop is more than that. Did you know that we are also considered a location for green auto recycling in New Hampshire? It’s true! And, while many people don’t associate salvage yards with ‘going green,’ we’re here to set the record straight.
What is a Green Yard?
First, let us start by saying not every yard is a green yard. Instead, the ones that claim to hold such a title must be certified. A certified green yard is an industry-friendly program designed to encourage salvage yards to go above and beyond environmental standards. Using Best Management Practices (BMPs) and Pollution Prevention (P2) strategies, you can feel good about shopping with a certified green auto recycling yard.
Best Management Practices
NHDES (New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services) has specific practices to help improve the environmental practices and maintenance of vehicle salvage facilities. Within these standards, you can find information concerning the potential risks of contamination through vehicle parts, common tasks that further pose risk, dismantling and storing guidelines, spill prevention and response, and so on.
NHDES also provides free and confidential facility reviews to ensure salvage yards are up to date and abiding by all guidelines. Below are a few more of the many categories addressed:
- Antifreeze
- Batteries
- Crushing Operations
- Floor Drains
- Mercury Switches
- Recovered Fuel
- Refrigerants
- Solvents and Washers
- Waste Tires
- Used Oil and Oil Filters
Pollution Prevention Strategies
Another working component of a Certified Green Yard is the Pollution Prevention strategies put in place by NHDES. P2 is ‘good for the environment, protects worker health from toxic substances, reduces waste, saves energy, conserves water, reduces the use of toxic chemicals and ultimately saves money.’
Hebert’s Used Auto Parts is proud to be part of the certified green auto recycling in New Hampshire by following the guidelines set forth from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. Since the inception in 1991, we’ve done our part one day at a time to ensure a safer environment for all.
At Hebert’s you can feel good about your purchase!
